Evaporation, Crystallisation, Distillation
Introduction
We are pleased about the interest you are
showing in our company.
GEA Wiegand
designs, manufactures and supplies plants for the chemical and pharmaceutical
industries, the food industry and for environmental applications.
First familiarize yourself with us and
take a look at the History of our Company and at Facts and Figures.
Find out about our activities in Research
and Development, our Manufacturing Workshop and what we think about Quality.
Our representative offices located in
many countries all over the world will be pleased to help you, and, with more
than 3000 plants supplied worldwide, we can certainly show you one of our
reference plants in your country as well.
Be informed that we are closely working with our sister
companies Niro France, Niro Inc. GEA Process Engineering SAS and GEA Messo
under the motto "United for Technology" in the Strategic Business Unit GEA
Evaporation and Crystallisation Technologies,in order to jointly concentrate
the competences in evaporation technology and to offer extended system
solutions to the market
Our product
divisions steam jet vacuum pumps und gas scrubber have been transferred to the
company GEA Jet Pumps GmbH in 1999.
To supplement our range of products we will offer membrane
plants in close cooperation with GEA Filtration/USA based on their technology
and references as from October 2002.
Industries we serve
Reasons for the
concentration of liquids in GEA Wiegand evaporation plants
In thermal separation technology, GEA
Wiegand evaporation plants are used for the concentration of liquids in the
form of solutions, suspensions and emulsions.
Concentration is part of the
production process.
Example:
sugar.
The solution containing sugar has to be
concentrated in an evaporation plant before crystallization.
Sugar cannot be crystallized from thin sugar solution.
The product
quality will be improved. Example: apple juice.
The quality of
apple juice is improved if the apple juice concentrate and the aroma
concentrate out of an evaporation plant are stored separately and are remixed
and rediluted as required.
Example:
rectification of alcohol.
A large number of volatile
impurities (up to 500) can be specifically separated by rectification. In this
way high-purity drinking alcohol is produced.
Production costs will be decreased.
Example: production of
pectin.
If pectin is precipitated from a concentrated
pectin solution, a lower quantity of precipitating agent is required than for
the concentration of pectin from thin solution.
Products will be recovered.
Example: silver.
Silver can be recovered from photographic effluents by means
of concentration in an evaporation plant.
Storage and transport costs will be
reduced. Example: starch
effluent.
The sto
rage of concentrated product requires considerably less storage space than the
storage of thin solution.
When liquid products for the
food industry are transported, it is often cheaper and easier to remove the
water in an evaporation plant and to add it at the place of destination.
Waste disposal
costs will be reduced. Example: industrial effluent
By
concentrating effluents in an evaporation plant the amount of waste is reduced.
Concentrated effluents can be used as energy carriers and pure water can be
retained as valuable material.
Example: recovery of solvents
Stripping
and distillation does not only separate substances polluting water, but renders
the solution clean to such an extent that it can be reconveyed to the
production process.
Disposal and dumping costs will be reduced by means of
crystallization. Example:
industrial waste water containing salt.
The industrial
waste water produced can be compressed to such an extent that the salt
contained in the waste water can be easily crystallized and separated, i.e. the
dumping costs are only limited to the relatively small quantities of salt. The
water evaporated can be reused as process water.
Valuable substances are separated from a solution by means of
crystallization.
Example:
pharmaceutical industry
Pharmaceutical substances can be
separated from an aqueous synthetic solution by means of crystallization.
Many of the world's leading manufacturers
are GEA Wiegand customers because our plants are designed to the strictest
safety and highest performance standards. GEA Wiegand offers technology to the
manufacturers of many chemical, dairy, food, and pharmaceutical products by
supplying individual plants or engineering of complete processing lines.
